2 July 2002: FinLab Use XML to Standardize Hedge Fund Communications

Geneva-based FinLab is targeting hedge funds with an XML-based format for issuing client reports. The move is in line with some of the initiatives recently begun by the FundsXML schema group.

FinLab was founded by former hedge fund manager Serge Billieux to address the problem of multiple reporting formats. Billieux found it difficult to manage performance reports sent by hedge funds.

These reports were received in a variety of formats, including Adobe, Word and hard copy by mail. Conversely, FinLab allows the funds to structure their reports using XML.

Participating hedge funds can e-mail their structured reports to clients, making it easier for customers to compare like with like. In particular, clients are able to assess and compare between fund managers more easily on such key factors as performance, administration and fees.

Prior to founding FinLab, Billieux worked for a number of private banks and funds, including Pictet, Union Banque Privee, Creinvest and Select Global Strategy.
